Governor Newsom Takes A Stand Against Prop 33

Momentum against Proposition 33 is growing. Governor Gavin Newsom is now officially opposed to Proposition 33 – joining a growing bipartisan coalition against extreme rent control. Prop 33 would repeal the Costa-Hawkins Rental Housing Act, allowing for extreme rent control on single-family homes and condos, and giving unelected rent boards the power to set strict rent controls – including when a tenant moves out – thus eliminating current vacancy decontrol protections. Furthermore, the complete removal of any limits on extreme rent control would severely limit, if not stop, the development and construction of new rental housing, ultimately hurting tenants and communities.

Newsom’s opposition affirms that Prop 33 is not the solution to California’s housing crisis. California REALTORS® must continue to raise awareness about the dangers of Prop 33. Together, we can protect housing opportunities and defeat Prop 33 in November.
