A Summer on Ventura: What's Actually Changing in Sherman Oaks This Season

July 9, 2026

Ventura Boulevard rarely changes all at once. A familiar sign disappears, a patio opens, paper goes up in a window, and a new counter begins serving lunch. Each update can feel minor on its own. Taken together, the changes along Sherman Oaks this summer reveal a clearer pattern.

This is a season of denser everyday use rather than wholesale reinvention. Established businesses are investing in their spaces. New operators are filling highly visible storefronts with bakeries, prepared food, casual dining, and specialty retail. At the same time, several announced openings remain works in progress, and the largest transportation project associated with the area is still in planning.

That distinction matters. For residents asking what’s new in Sherman Oaks in summer 2026, the most useful answer is not a list of everything announced. It is a careful look at what is open, what is still pending, and what may change the daily rhythm of the boulevard.

The defining change this summer is practical: more reasons to use Ventura Boulevard repeatedly throughout the week, from bread and prepared food to outdoor dining and specialty shopping.

A clear status check before the tour

Several openings have been discussed for months, but their status is not the same. Here is the current picture as of July 11, 2026.

Status Business or project What has changed
Open Casa Vega The Ray Vega Patio expanded the longtime restaurant at 13301 Ventura Blvd.
Open Mother’s Bread A new independent sourdough bakery is operating at 13368 1/2 Ventura Blvd.
Open Eagle Liquor The business has replaced Tony’s Liquor Store at Ventura and Sunnyslope.
Open Burger She Wrote The Oklahoma-style smash-burger concept is serving at 14245 Ventura Blvd.
Open Honey Baked Ham The new location opened June 22 at 14427 Ventura Blvd.
Planned for late summer Yama Sushi Marketplace A 7,200-square-foot Japanese specialty market is planned at 15300 Ventura Blvd.
Planned for summer Gloria by La Era The bakery concept is expected at 13944 Ventura Blvd., with no firm opening date published.
Awaiting confirmation Greco’s New York Pizzeria and Sumi Sushi Both have been announced, but current opening dates have not been confirmed.

The difference between open and announced may seem modest, but it is central to understanding the boulevard. Summer plans can move. Licensing, construction, inspections, and tenant improvements do not always follow a public target date.

At the east end, old addresses are taking on new roles

Casa Vega offers the clearest example of reinvestment in an established Sherman Oaks institution. The restaurant marked its 70th year in March 2026 by opening the Ray Vega Patio at 13301 Ventura Blvd.

The roughly 3,000-square-foot addition seats about 100 people and includes a retractable roof and permanent heaters. Part of the parking area was converted for the project, and the restaurant’s footprint nearly doubled.

The significance is larger than the additional tables. Casa Vega did not leave the boulevard for a newer development or replace its original identity. It expanded where it has operated for decades. That decision adds capacity to an existing destination and gives Ventura another year-round outdoor dining option.

A few blocks west, the corner at Ventura Boulevard and Sunnyslope tells a different version of the same story. Tony’s Liquor Store, which dated to 1947, has closed. Eagle Liquor now operates in its place, preserving the corner’s basic neighborhood-service function under a new name.

Next door, Mother’s Bread has introduced a much more specialized use. The independent bakery at 13368 1/2 Ventura Blvd. makes three types of sourdough with a grape-based starter. According to the June update from the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Association, owner and baker Nick produces roughly 100 loaves per day, with the bread often selling out.

That combination is a useful measure of the current shift. A longstanding corner service remains, but an independent bakery now gives residents a reason to stop for a specific product that may become part of a weekly routine.

The middle of the boulevard is becoming more useful for casual stops

Burger She Wrote is now open at 14245 Ventura Blvd., removing it from the long list of Sherman Oaks businesses described as coming soon. Founded by skateboarder Don “Nuge” Nguyen and restaurateur Steven Arroyo, the concept centers on Oklahoma-style smash burgers made with American Wagyu beef and King’s Hawaiian buns.

The menu is intentionally focused, with burgers, grilled cheese, fries, and the signature Oklahoma burger. The Sherman Oaks location currently lists hours beginning at 11:30 a.m. daily, extending to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Nearby, Honey Baked Ham opened at 14427 Ventura Blvd. on June 22. Sherman Oaks residents Tony Vennie and Leslie David Baker own and operate the store. Its ribbon cutting and formal grand-opening celebration are scheduled for July 11, the date of this update.

Neither arrival represents destination dining in the traditional sense. Their importance lies in frequency. Lunch, takeout, prepared food, and straightforward dinner options support repeated local use. This type of business can bring activity to a block across more hours of the day than an evening-only concept.

Food is not the only category changing. Guardian Angel Security Group has established a larger showroom at 13610 Ventura Blvd.. A neighborhood report initially pointed to a mid-July opening, while the company’s current site already identifies the address as its flagship Ventura Boulevard showroom. The careful description is that the expanded location is becoming operational this summer.

Yama could change the format of Sushi Row

The largest forthcoming opening is Yama Sushi Marketplace, planned for late summer at 15300 Ventura Blvd., Suite 102G.

At 7,200 square feet, this will be Yama’s fourth and largest location. The plan includes grab-and-go sushi, sashimi, bentos, Japanese specialty products, and a larger production kitchen supporting catering and delivery. A beverage program featuring sake and Japanese spirits is also planned, subject to licensing.

Yama matters because it is not another conventional sit-down sushi restaurant. It adds a specialty-market format to a section of Ventura Boulevard already associated with a high concentration of sushi businesses. Residents who currently make a separate trip for prepared sushi, Japanese pantry items, or specialty beverages may have a new option close to the Sherman Oaks Galleria.

The late-summer target should still be treated as a target. Current reporting on the project does not establish that the store is open yet.

Behind the papered windows, timing remains the question

Three announced food businesses deserve a place on the watch list, but none should be presented as a completed opening.

Gloria by La Era is planned for 13944 Ventura Blvd. in the former Gracefully Fed space. The concept comes from Mexico-based Pastelerías La Era and is expected to offer cakes, breads, pastries, and pan dulce. The available reporting points to a summer opening without a firm date.

Greco’s New York Pizzeria has been reported as the future tenant in the former Santino’s NY Pizza space near Woodman and Ventura. Greco’s already operates in Hollywood and Tarzana, but no confirmed opening date for Sherman Oaks has been published.

Sumi Sushi was announced as a first-location concept beside Burger She Wrote and was previously expected to open in June. A strong July confirmation was not available. For now, it remains an announced arrival rather than an operating recommendation.

This may feel cautious for a seasonal guide, but it is more useful than sending residents to unfinished storefronts. Confirmed openings can be visited now. Announced concepts belong in a separate category until their doors are open.

The closures are part of the story

New signage does not automatically mean the boulevard has added a business overall.

Santino’s NY Pizza closed in March after nearly 20 years near Woodman and Ventura. Its reported replacement, Greco’s, suggests that the space may continue as a pizzeria, but the transition is not complete.

Samos also closed at Ventura Boulevard and Woodman Avenue after operating for about two years. As of the June neighborhood update, no replacement had been identified.

These departures keep the summer story in proportion. Ventura Boulevard is experiencing active turnover, not uninterrupted growth. Some spaces are returning to use quickly. Others remain unresolved. The strongest change is the concentration of practical new options within existing commercial spaces, not a sudden expansion of the corridor itself.

The street improvements are targeted, not boulevard-wide

The public-facing work around the Ventura and Van Nuys core is similarly incremental.

The Village at Sherman Oaks Business Improvement District’s 2026 plan assigns $146,785 to landscaping, sanitation, and beautification, compared with $79,624 for image enhancement and special projects. That balance points toward maintenance and focused upgrades rather than a comprehensive redesign.

Planned work includes two landscaped medians on Van Nuys Boulevard, an ornamental pedestrian-light project, replacement of median palm-tree lights, possible string lights at BID entrances, and continuing repairs to sidewalks, curbs, and tree wells.

The medians are planned between Moorpark and Hortense streets. The project is designed to discourage unsafe turns, calm traffic, add a pedestrian refuge and accessible curb ramp at Milbank Street, and introduce a Sherman Oaks community sign. An earlier city report estimated the work at $683,473.

No reliable summer completion date has been published. The BID also covers a defined portion of the commercial district, not the full Sherman Oaks stretch of Ventura Boulevard. Residents should expect localized work near the Ventura and Van Nuys core rather than a corridor-wide streetscape project.

The Metro decision is real, but construction is not beginning this summer

The Sepulveda Transit Corridor became more specific in January 2026 when Metro selected Modified Alternative 5. The plan calls for underground heavy rail between the Van Nuys Metrolink station and the E Line’s Expo/Sepulveda station, with a connection to the G Line at Van Nuys Boulevard.

Metro still identifies the project’s current phase as planning. In May 2026, the agency approved more environmental, engineering, and community-participation work, with related contracts extending through December 31, 2028.

For Sherman Oaks residents, the practical takeaway is straightforward. The project has advanced beyond a broad menu of alternatives, but immediate tunneling or station construction should not be folded into the list of changes happening on Ventura Boulevard this summer.

What to watch next

By the end of summer, Yama Sushi Marketplace may become the most substantial new daily-use destination in this group. Gloria by La Era, Greco’s, and Sumi Sushi may also clarify their timelines. The medians and lighting work around the BID warrant attention, but their completion dates remain open.

The next firm boulevard date arrives in fall. The Sherman Oaks Street Fair is scheduled for Sunday, October 18, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Ventura Boulevard between Kester and Van Nuys. Summer is when sponsorship and vendor participation begin, making it an early marker for what comes next.

Read together, the verified changes point to a boulevard being reinforced one address at a time. Legacy businesses are investing. New operators are favoring repeat-use categories. Larger plans are moving forward carefully, without remaking the street overnight.

Local change often matters before it becomes a headline.
